MacArthurGlen, Europe’s leading outlet operator, has incorporated a highly original Maison des Métiers d’Art into its latest outlet village, Paris Giverny. This spacious venue, designed in partnership with the Portes de Normandie Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) and the Eure Chamber of Trades and Crafts (CMA), is intended to be a space for exhibiting, demonstrating, and practicing regional artisanal skills. “The missing link between the workshop and the store… a platform for exchange between visitors, customers, and the region’s artisans,” in the words of designer Mathieu Lehanneur, who conceived this hybrid space. The expansive structure spans a ground floor and a mezzanine, offering visitors an on-site introduction to the artisans, their techniques, and their creations. Chambers Architects was tasked with implementing the project from both operational and regulatory perspectives, working closely with the firm Agilité Solutions. As is often the case, this process led to interactions with the design itself—and in this instance, with heightened environmental requirements. The mural originally planned for both levels was therefore abandoned in favor of a plaster and flax fiber render from Plâtres Vieujot.
