Concorde F, Madeleine D, Opéra E… the buildings in the Collines de l’Arche complex in La Défense, owned by Cofia, feature spacious lobbies. This was not the case for the last of the four, Opéra C. The challenge presented to Chambers Architects was therefore simple: to enhance the space and bring it up to the standard of similar projects the firm had already completed.
Today, visitors and occupants of Opéra C are greeted by a truly spectacular and inviting space, clad in golden metal mesh. This transformation is the result of a combination of changes to both the space and the materials: expanded floor space gained from the adjacent office area, a wall covered with a mesh curtain, the installation of a mirror-effect stretched-fabric ceiling, the relocation and widening of the double-height glass entrance door, and the repositioning of the reception desk. The visual impact is striking, and the sensation of being enveloped upon entering is both gentle and warm. The upper-level office floors, common areas, and elevator lobbies have also been completely renovated in anticipation of their new tenants.
